Athlete Spotlight - Samantha "Sam" Miale

How old are you? - 14

What grade are you in? - 8th

Where do you attend school? - Hickory Ridge Middle School

What sport(s) do you play? - Basketball is my primary sport, but I also have played softball, done gymnastics in the past and enjoy playing volleyball with my friends

Why did you first choose your sport? - Starting so young, I was doing a lot of other things at the same time, but basketball just stuck. But mostly because its really fun!

Why do you continue to play your sport? - I love that feeling I get on the court. I just love intensity and quickness and the hypeness it creates. But that feeling of clarity of being able to play at that time, that moment without worrying about anything else.

If you could achieve anything you wished for in your sport, what would it be? - Getting a D1 offer to play

How important is achieving your sporting goals to you? - I’d say very important but grades are number one for me.

What is your favorite sports quote? - “A winner is someone who recognizes his/her God-given talents, works his/her tail off to develop them into skills and use those skills to accomplish his/her goals.” Larry Bird

What emotions do you feel when you play well? - Energized, Happy, more motivated to keep working hard

What is your favorite song to listen to prior to competing? - Wolves by Big Sean and Post Malone

What is your favorite movie about sports? - Glory Road

How does being an athlete make you a better person? - It keeps me active and want to be healthy and eat good. It also has a lot to say about being a team player. Building each other up is really important to me.

What is the one thing you always do after a good performance? - Team celebrations and photos. Reliving games with my family watching all the videos they take.

What do you do to calm your butterflies while you compete? - I just take my time getting warmed up get my mindset right with music. Think about my Grandpa that he’s watching over me. My brother just has a way too of telling me “I got this” and to “play my game” and I feel better.

If you could play another sport what would it be? - Volleyball

What age were you when you started your sport? - 5-6 years old in Harrisburg Rec

What is your favorite food to eat the night before a big competition? - Anything!! My moms a real good cook.

Who inspired you as a young athlete? - Elena Della Donne

What one word describes you? - Determined

Who was your favorite coach and why? - My team coaches!! Zo and JT. They truly care about my development as a player. They take the time to teach and coach. They have a great understanding of the game from playing at Virginia Tech and professionally. They help me build my confidence and basketball skills.

What do you give up to play sports? - I give up a lot of free time.

What is your favorite place to compete? - On the court

What mental tool do you use under pressure? - Talking to my parents and my brother. They help me get focused game faced ready. They also teach me that it is ok to laugh and smile too.

What is your favorite mantra? - What did you do to get better today?

Do you think attitude is a factor in winning? - Definitely! You can get yourself in a negative attitude or mood and blow the game

What image gets you ready to compete? - Shooting 3’s!! I love shooting 3 pointers!!

How does being an athlete inspire you to do good? - It inspires me because it makes me think that I can do more. More in life in general and more in life of basketball. It allows me to pursue my passion to play. Showing myself and my teammates my confidence and being a leader on the team allows me to be a good role model too.

How does athletics make you a better student or worker? - Time management, Practice makes progress, Being in a routine
